The Weardale Room is laid out as a lead-miner’s cottage kitchen might have looked in about 1880. Visitors are free
to explore the room and carefully handle objects to discover their purpose.
Try your hand at matting, which was a social, whole family event that lasted, in some homes, until the
advent of TV in the early 1950s.
The kitchen was mother’s domain, but upstairs our display looks at life through the eyes of the children.
