We provide a sense of place for those who live and visit Weardale by telling the stories of its history and heritage. Attached is High House Chapel, the oldest Methodist Chapel in continuous use. We also specialise in providing family history research for people who have ancestors from Weardale.

WHAT WE DO

We are open from 1.30 - 4.30pm

 

Easter and Bank Holidays

 

May, June, Sept  & Oct - Wed to Sunday

 

July and August - every afternoon.

 

Extra Opening Times in school holidays

 

The Museum will also open for  County Durham school holidays between 4th April and 1st November.

 

The next school holidays are Easter

4th April - 19th April

We are a small independent folk museum run entirely by volunteers to the high standards set by the Arts Council for England.

The Methodist Fellowship at High House Chapel has now ceased worship in the chapel and the Museum is in the final stages of purchasing the building after which it will seek the funding to carry out repairs and renovations thus saving an important building in our community.

 

High House is an historic Methodist Chapel, built in n1760 it is one of the very earliest chapels in the world.
