Our Museum is run entirely by volunteers.
The Museum is a registered charity whose Trustees are elected annually by its members “The Friends of the Weardale Museum”. The 16 elected Trustees meet every month to make decisions. Keeping the Museum open for the advertised hours is a major task and we have about 25-30 volunteer stewards who take turns to welcome visitors. New Stewards are always welcome.
Though voluntary the Museum seeks to achieve the highest standards of care for its collection and since 1992 we have achieved Accredited Status with the MLA, which sets the benchmarks for all museums in the country.
We received a Carnegie Award for excellent interpretation and are recognised by Renaissance North and Arts Council for England as an “outstanding volunteer run museum”.
We are grateful for the help and support of our community for over 33 years and wish to acknowledge the contribution of many Friends and volunteers who are no longer with us.
The Museum is an independent organisation without subsidy from any local authority, business or patron.
