Our opening times

Remember !!   Because we are staffed by volunteers we only open during the afternoon so plan your visit to avoid disappointment.

Find us beside the A689 between Stanhope and Alston at the centre of the North Pennines and only an hour by car from Tyneside, Teesside and the Lake District. Whichever way you come, the scenery is breathtaking!

Public Transport

Service 100 Roof of England Bus operates on Sundays.

Weardale Motor Services (01388 528235) run a regular bus service through Weardale except on Sundayys and Bank Holidays.

Linking bus services are available from Durham, Newcastle and Bishop Auckland but contact traveline on tel: 0871 2002233 for your own needs.

Access for wheelchairs is provided from the door by the main road and we can remove furniture to provide better access for wheelchair users. Two downstairs rooms and the chapel are accessible, and displays in the upstairs galleries can be viewed in our large books.  Stewards will, where possible, bring items downstairs.  There are a number of chairs sited around the building fo visitors to take a rest.
