Find us beside the A689 between Stanhope and Alston at the centre of the North Pennines and only an hour by car from Tyneside, Teesside and the Lake District.


Whichever way you come, the scenery is breathtaking!

Public Transport


Service 100 Roof of England Bus operates on Sundays.


Weardale Motor Services (01388 528235) run a regular bus service through Weardale except on Sundays and Bank Holidays.



Linking bus services are available from Durham, Newcastle and Bishop Auckland but contact traveline on tel: 0871 2002233 for your own needs.

When are we open ?

1.30pm - 4.30pm

Easter and Bank Holidays

May, June, Sept, and October  (Wednesday to Sunday inclusive)

Every afternoon in July and August

At any time, by appointment only, for organised groups.  


We are also open during the Durham County Council school holidays between 4th April and 1st November.


The next school holidays are 4th April - 19th April


Remember !!   Because we are staffed by volunteers we only open during the afternoon so plan your visit to avoid disappointment.

Adult £3                Children FREE.

When you've seen the quality of our displays and the work of our volunteers you can always make a donation.

Access ?

Parking is behind the Museum but visitors can be dropped off at the door.


The Museum is a two up and two down cottage with the upper floor accessed by stairs with a bannister. Access for wheelchair users to the two downstairs rooms is provided from the door by the main road and we can remove furniture to improve the experience.  Our upstairs displays including the Weardale Tapestry can be viewed in our large books and on our specially designed ipad displays.


There are a number of chairs sited around the building for visitors to take a rest.
